Why RetinaPro?

More than a generic eye vitamin.

The AREDS2 trial established an important nutritional foundation for people at risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration, using six key nutrients. Rather than simply reproduce that formula, we looked at the wider evidence around retinal nutrition and considered whether additional ingredients could offer complementary benefits.

RetinaPro therefore combines the established AREDS2 nutritional foundation with five carefully selected additional ingredients, including meso-zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, turmeric and B vitamins. Each has been chosen for a specific nutritional rationale, creating a broader formulation while remaining clear about which ingredients are supported by the AREDS2 trial and which are additional to it.

The result is a carefully considered formula that brings together established science with newer nutritional thinking — designed to provide comprehensive nutritional support for retinal health.

“We started with the only formula that’s actually been proven.”

The AREDS2 foundation. Plus five.

RetinaPro starts with the nutritional foundation established by the AREDS2 research and builds on it with five carefully selected additional ingredients. Together, they provide a broader approach to nutritional support for the retina.

The AREDS2 foundation

Six key nutrients at the levels used in the AREDS2 formulation

Lutein

A key macular carotenoid that helps support the macular pigment.

Zeaxanthin

A naturally occurring macular carotenoid that works alongside lutein.

Vitamin C

An essential antioxidant nutrient that helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin E

An antioxidant vitamin that helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Zinc

An essential mineral that contributes to the maintenance of normal vision.

Copper

An essential trace mineral included alongside zinc as part of the AREDS2 formulation.

Then we looked beyond AREDS2

Five additional ingredients

Research into eye and retinal nutrition has continued to develop since the original AREDS2 studies. RetinaPro adds five carefully selected ingredients chosen for their complementary nutritional roles.

Meso-zeaxanthin

The third macular carotenoid, complementing lutein and zeaxanthin as part of the macular pigment.

Astaxanthin

A naturally occurring carotenoid with powerful antioxidant properties.

Turmeric

A traditional botanical containing curcumin, selected for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Vitamin B2

Contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin B6

An important B vitamin that supports normal energy-yielding metabolism and the normal functioning of the nervous system.

11 carefully selected ingredients.

One complete approach to retinal nutrition.

The evidence

Built on established science. Extended by newer research.

The AREDS and AREDS2 studies, conducted by the US National Eye Institute, established the strongest clinical evidence for nutritional supplementation in people with appropriate stages of age-related macular degeneration. AREDS2 refined the original formulation by replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin.

25%

The AREDS/AREDS2 research found a reduction in the risk of progression to advanced AMD in the appropriate study population.

Established foundation

The AREDS2 foundation

RetinaPro contains the key nutrients used in the AREDS2 formulation — vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin — providing an evidence-based nutritional foundation for retinal health.

Continuing research

Looking beyond the original formula

Research into retinal nutrition has continued since AREDS2. RetinaPro therefore also includes five additional ingredients selected from the wider scientific literature, with research exploring their roles in areas such as macular pigment, antioxidant protection and inflammatory pathways.

For example, studies of the macular carotenoids have shown that adding meso-zeaxanthin alongside lutein and zeaxanthin can increase macular pigment levels, with research also exploring potential effects on visual function.

Other ingredients, including astaxanthin and curcumin, have attracted research because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and their potential relevance to retinal health. The evidence is still developing, but it provides a scientific rationale for exploring their complementary role alongside the established AREDS2 nutrients.

RetinaPro approach

A broader approach to retinal nutrition

RetinaPro brings together the established AREDS2 nutritional foundation with newer research into complementary ingredients — creating a broader, carefully considered approach to nutritional support for the retina.

Quality & simplicity

Made in the UK. Made with purpose.

RetinaPro is designed around a simple principle: a premium product should be easy to understand, straightforward to take and clear about what it contains.

FAQs

Questions people actually ask.

RetinaPro is a food supplement for adults. It contains the six nutrients used in the AREDS2 formula, plus five added ingredients. It is designed to support normal eye-health nutrition alongside regular eye care.

No. RetinaPro is a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

RetinaPro was developed with input from a UK retinal specialist. The aim is to provide clear, careful information about eye-health nutrition.

Research found that an AREDS2 formula may help some people with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD), or advanced AMD in one eye. It is not suitable for everyone. Ask your eye-care professional if it is right for you.

No supplement can promise to prevent AMD. RetinaPro should not replace eye tests, medical advice, a balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.

No. Food supplements cannot restore sight that has been lost. Speak to an optometrist or ophthalmologist if you notice any change in your vision.

AREDS2 was a large clinical study of nutrition and age-related macular degeneration. It tested a formula containing vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin.

RetinaPro contains the six AREDS2 nutrients at the established study levels. It also contains turmeric, astaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, riboflavin and vitamin B6.

In people with intermediate AMD, or advanced AMD in one eye, the study formulas reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD by about 25%.

No. A general multivitamin is made for broad nutritional support. RetinaPro contains specific eye-health nutrients, including higher levels of some nutrients than a normal multivitamin.

Check both labels carefully. Taking products together may give you too much zinc, copper, vitamin C, vitamin E or other nutrients. Ask a pharmacist, GP or eye-care professional before combining supplements.

A balanced diet is important, but it may not provide the same nutrient amounts used in AREDS2. If your eye-care professional has advised an AREDS2 supplement, do not replace it without speaking to them.

They are lutein 10 mg, zeaxanthin 2 mg, vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 400 IU, zinc 25 mg and copper 2 mg.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the macula, the central part of the retina. They replaced beta-carotene in the AREDS2 formula.

Meso-zeaxanthin is another carotenoid alongside lutein and zeaxanthin

Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidant nutrients used in the AREDS2 formula. RetinaPro includes them at the established AREDS2 levels.

Turmeric is one of RetinaPro’s five added ingredients. It was selected as part of the wider antioxidant blend.

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring red carotenoid with antioxidant properties. It is one of RetinaPro’s five added ingredients.

Riboflavin is vitamin B2 and contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Both are RetinaPro additions.

Follow the directions on the pack. Taking supplements with a meal may be easier for some people. Ask a pharmacist if you have stomach problems or difficulty swallowing.

Take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for one you missed.

Eye-health supplements are usually considered for long-term use, but your needs can change. Review your supplements with your eye-care professional or pharmacist from time to time.

Food supplements can cause unwanted effects in some people. Stop taking RetinaPro and seek advice if you feel unwell or think you are having a reaction. Get urgent help for severe symptoms.

Yes, some nutrients and turmeric may interact with medicines. Ask a GP or pharmacist before use if you take regular medication.

Speak to your GP, pharmacist or specialist before use if you take warfarin, another anticoagulant, an antiplatelet medicine or have a bleeding disorder.
